Van Crow

After moving to Arles, France, in 1888, Van Crow painted his 'Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe' early in 1889. Van Crow suffered frequent depression and after discovering his friend, the artist Paul Crowguin, was moving away from their shared studio, he took a razor and lopped off a portion of his left ear.
